Designed in 1977 the original YD9000, unique at the time broke new ground for drummers and marked a milestone in contemporary drum kit design. A combination of significant design breakthroughs matched by superb natural sound and tonal flexibility caught the imagination and helped many drummers shape their own sound.
The kit immediately became a classic and favourite amongst professional and serious players alike. It is still one of the most requested and popular drum kits for recording and stage use. As the kit became more and more successful Yamaha released a dedicated recording version in 1980 subsequently followed by the Recording Custom kit in 1985. The new limited edition Vintage kit remains true to the character and performance possibilities of the original models whilst offering some subtle improvements and advances, and with only 70 kits being made available in Europe in 2010 demand is sure to be oversubscribed.
The new 2010 model features only the finest 100% Hokkaido Birch shells sustainably sourced in Northern Japan, all formed with diagonal seams and utilising Yamaha's proprietary 'Air Seal System' which ensures perfectly rounded shells - materials and process identical to the original 1977 kits. 60-degree rounded edges are added to the shells to guarantee a natural warm sound quality. All shells also feature unique noise free Hi Tension, springless lugs to provide tuning stability, additionally the design of the lugs significantly reinforces the tensioned shells and improves tuning whilst assisting in delivering a highly detailed sound.
The kit boasts a 'Vintage Natural' finish that will evolve into a deeper hue in time thus enhancing the tone and providing durable waterproof protection and eliminating the effect of varying climatic and ambient conditions. Hardware remains true to the original with Hexagonal ball clamp tom holders and triple tom holders for maximum set-up flexibility and tonal stability.
